Teachers Get Techy

On August 23, Time Magazine featured an article titled Teachers Get Techy: Education-Focused Start Ups Are Making In-roads into Classrooms. The article focused mainly on the different technologies university students and teachers are beginning to use as a key part of their curriculum, and the advantages of using such technologies within the classroom. I have to say that up until last semester, I was strongly opposed to implementing technology for the use of teaching mainly because I thought it afforded students too many opportunities to be lazy. For example, instead of having to read a textbook to find out answers to homework questions, students could simply type a question into Google and get the answer immediately, without having to work for the answer or learn a single thing about the subject. That bothered me. For so long, I saw technology as something that devalued traditional text books and ultimately gave students an easy way out. Now, however, after a semester of observing a sixth-grade classroom which implemented technology in every single subject, and after getting all this first-hand experience with new technologically advanced programs for students, I realize how incredibly helpful, efficient, necessary, and engaging technology within the classroom actually is. I think it’s a great way to get students connected, and plugged into what is going on not only within their own schools, but also the world around them. In the article, the writer stated that technology “transforms the whole classroom experience from a passive one, to an active one”, and I couldn’t agree more. It is so exciting to see all the new programs and technologies that have been created for classrooms in just the last couple of years, and the positive effects they are having on students learning. I look forward to seeing even more progress in the years to come and the opportunity to implement all these technologies in my own classroom.
