I don’t usually think “class was awesome!” after CO 301D, but yesterday it was. I loved looking at other people’s projects, and I loved sharing mine with some of my classmates and answering the questions they had.
For those of you who didn’t see mine, I designed a reading poster, like one you would see in a library, about modern adaptations of classic novels. Not as replacements for the classics, but more like supplements and to encourage students not only to read, but to look at the classics in a different light and perhaps help them understand said classics better. Here’s my poster:
The classics featured are: Wuthering Heights, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland/The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Hamlet (2), The Great Gatsby, Pride and Prejudice, and a play called Cyrano de Bergerac.
The corresponding adaptations are: Wuthering High, Down the Rabbit Hole, Finn, Ophelia, Something Rotten, Jake Reinvented, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and M or F?
All but two of the books (Ophelia and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) are updated to the present day, with teenage protagonists and a high school setting. M or F? has a prominent gay character and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (and the rest of that series) is a parody, so if you’ve read the original you can see all the original dialogue and ideas alongside the setting of a zombie apocolypse. Wuthering High is part of the Bard Academy series, which is a boarding school for deliquents with ghosts of famous writers, like Emily Brontë, as teachers. Down the Rabbit Hole is also part of a series and the only one that combines two classics. I’ve only read three of these adaptations – Down the Rabbit Hole, Ophelia, and Jake Reinvented – but they were all pretty good.
